U.S. soldiers, with whom I now have more than a passing acquaintance, joke that they track my movements in order to know where they will be deployed next.
186
I’m a tomboy now. I always wanted to fit in with my brother’s group, so I climbed trees and played with lead soldiers. But I’m a woman’s woman. I never understood women who don’t have woman friends.
187
‘The Descent,’ ‘Dog Soldiers,’ those films, I’ve loved for years, and the tones of those.
188
We need to fix this. It hasn’t been done yet because there’s still a reluctance to admit that there was even a problem – anywhere above seven rogue soldiers who got out of control on the night shift.
189
This conflict is one thing I’ve been waiting for. I’m well and strong and young – young enough to go to the front. If I can’t be a soldier, I’ll help soldiers.
190

193
One interesting thing about jazz, or art in general, but jazz especially is such an individual art form in the sense that improvisation is such a big part of it, so it feels like it should be less soldiers in an army and more like free spirits melding. And yet, big band jazz has a real military side to it.
194
When I was between the ages of five and nine, the soldiers of the Second World War wanted to have Betty Grable, but I wanted to be Betty Grable. She was the epitome of an alluring woman; she had it all as far as I was concerned.
195
I’d like people to listen to our soldiers. They were there. They heard the alarms go off. They tasted the substance in the air. They spit up blood. They had rashes on their bodies. They got sick.

Washington has thrown their soldiers on the fire.
204
All you would hear every night on the news was that somebody had been shot dead in a certain part of Belfast. We lived opposite a judge, and there were always soldiers crouched down in our garden. We’d sit and talk to them, and I even used to sing to them!

A lot of songwriters have written about soldiers and war, but very few have written with them.

Our aim was to quickly determine who in that community was a legitimate actor who could be trusted with a firearm and who was not.
207
I’ve done movies that I’ve been advised not to do. ‘Dog Soldiers,’ the movie I did 11 years ago now, I remember my agent at the time was like, ‘You shouldn’t do that. It’s a weird film about werewolves,’ and it became a cult hit.
208
The action of ‘Horse Soldiers’ is back-dropped by the story of how America went to war with little time to prepare – but with a lot of moxie.

214
‘Home’ is an important word for our soldiers, sailors, airmen and women. They regularly put their lives at risk in order to make us feel safe in our own homes while fighting to provide overseas communities with that same security.
215
Ten soldiers wisely led will beat a hundred without a head.

221
My calling was first of all to ensure there was peace in the country, because we could easily have gone back to war. 222
I write back to all the soldiers who write to me and send them posters and calendars.

228
In Iraq and Afghanistan, our soldiers signed up intentionally. That’s a huge difference from the largely conscripted army of my era.
229
Let’s get one thing straight: I am not an adrenaline junkie. Just because you cover conflict doesn’t mean you thrive on adrenaline. It means you have a purpose, and you feel it is very important for people back home to see what is happening on the front line, especially if we are sending American soldiers there.
230
The first song is called ‘London.’ It’s about two Russian soldiers who desert the Russian army and escape to London, where they indulge in a life of crime.

I worked for the troops my entire time in the United States Armed Forces because we know in the United States Armed Forces that it’s not the generals and the colonels that win battles, it’s the soldiers: it’s the people at the front, the mechanics with their wrenches, the drivers moving the logistics back in the rear.

Yes, India is intolerant towards women, at least when it comes to their safety issues. When I was shooting in Jharkhand, I was constantly being followed by two soldiers to ensure that I was safe. Women are so unsafe in our country.
